Time management is so tricky for those of us who work at home. I can not tell you how many people think that because I work at home, I have tons of “free time.”

Over the years, I’ve worked both outside the home full-time and inside the home while running my own business and home-educating my kids.

What I’ve learned is that both situations require good time management skills, but not necessarily the same time management skills.

When you work outside the home while homeschooling, you have dedicated work hours, and a big hurdle is finding childcare for homeschoolers. Time management skills are needed to juggle travel, homeschooling, meal planning, and more.

Whereas if you work at home, you must figure out how to work at home with kids and block out the distractions such as housework and kids playing around them to get things done.

7 Time Management Tips For Work At Home Moms

Before I share my top time management tips for work at home moms, I want you to know there is no such thing as adding more time to your day.

If you are looking at work at home moms who look like they are rocking this lifestyle, understand they aren’t superwomen.

They have time management tools that help them organize their time effectively.

I’m going to share with you seven time management tips for work at home moms, and you can see how they can be implemented in your life.

1. Create A Simple Schedule

Create a simple schedule that outlines your work and homeschooling responsibilities.

Decide when you will focus on working and when you will focus on homeschooling.

Creating an outline for tasks to be done during those times can help you stay organized. I like to use a list of everything that needs to be done.

Don’t forget to include breaks and time for self-care in your schedule.

2. Use Time-Blocking

Divide your day into time blocks for work, homeschooling, and household chores.

This is one of my favorite time management techniques to reduce stress. Sometimes I feel extremely overwhelmed when I look at my to-do list.

Time blocking the tasks allows you to focus on one task at a time and avoid getting overwhelmed.

When time-blocking, start with tasks that are connected to a time. I call these fixed time blocks because we don’t have control over when they happen, but we do need to show up.

Then add in anything else, such as homeschool blocks, meals/cooking blocks, self-care blocks, etc.

Time blocking for moms can be pretty simple and one of my favorite time management tools.

3. Prioritize Your Task List

Once you have your to-do list written and time blocks created, prioritize your list.

One method is to use The Eisenhower Matrix (a.k.a. The Urgent Vs The Important).

To summarize, you consider the importance and the urgency of each task on your to-do list. Then put the things that are most important and most urgent at the top.

A word of warning, don’t forget to add in things that are important but not urgent because they still need to get done.

4. Set Boundaries

If I had to pick only one of these time management tips for work at home moms, setting boundaries would top my list.

Make sure your family and clients know when you’re available for work and when you’re not.

You may want to consider creating a designated workspace that signals to your family that you’re working and should not be interrupted.

From experience, I will tell you that kids are often trained faster than family or friends.

Clearly communicate with your loved ones and then set up visual reminders for your kids.

Some moms have had great success with a light, a sign, or even sticking a note on their door to say “do not disturb.”

For the last three years, I’ve hosted live group coaching calls on the same day at the same time. If I don’t send out reminder texts that I am unavailable, it never fails someone calls or shows up at my door.

5. Create Space In Your Calander

Do you ever notice at the end of your day, there are still a ton of tasks you never even started on?

Chances are you are overpacking your day.

There are only 24 hours in any day, and you have the right to use some of them for eating and sleeping.

One way to create space in your calendar is to outsource.

Consider outsourcing some of your work or homeschooling tasks to others. For example, you may want to hire a virtual assistant if you run an online business.

For homeschooling, you could tutor to help you with some of your responsibilities or use an online program.

6. Use Time-Saving Tools

Like it or not, technology is here to stay. Why not make it work for you?

Utilize tools like project management software, time-tracking apps, productivity apps for working moms and automated email responses to save time and streamline your work.
