Our 10th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Before I dig in and share what we have planned for our 10th grade homeschool curriculum I must admit time sure has flown.

I remember staring down at my chubby, blonde haired, blue-eyed boy and reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? over and over again. He loved this book so much we ended up having to replace it. I can still recall most of the book by heart.

Scraping peanut butter letters off the window that he had created while I was chasing his sister. I think he was trying to start a new art trend. Window Edible Art. It should totally be a thing.

Now I look up at my tall 15-year-old boy-man with the deep voice and blonde hair. He tells me about coding and explains math to me. 😉

This year he had pretty much 99% of the say on what he wanted to study. We picked out what he needed as far what was “required”as in the  number of math, science, etc. He chose how to fill them.

Before you ask, no, he doesn’t know what he wants to do when he grows up. Also, no, this doesn’t freak me out. When I was 15 I didn’t know either. In fact, I am still not sure what I want to be when I grow up.

Our 10 Grade Homeschool Curriculum (2017-2018)

As a mom who is juggling working and homeschooling finding the right curriculum for my family is hard. After he tells me what he wants to study I use this step by step plan to help me find resources that my son can choose from.

Math:

Last year he started with Geometry and realized he was missing something. We sat down and discussed it and he chose to switch to Algebra.

He has decided he’d like to finish Algebra one and then retry Geometry. He will be using Easy Peasy (also known as All in One Homeschool). He has access to a tutor as well through Easy Peasy which is always nice.

Along with Knowre for supplementary and practice work. He also has 5 free math sites he loves for help when he is stuck.

Language Arts:

My son loves Writing with Skill. We break this up into a 2-year course. He will continue with Vol. 2.

He will also have a list of books as per his request to read. I have yet to make this list but I will update his reading choices on the resource page that you can find on the top menu under Homeschooling Resources. (Choose 2017-2018 Grade 10) He will be scheduled 30 minutes of reading time a day.

Spelling and Grammar:

We love using Spelling Workout. He will continue on with this series and for grammar, he will use Analytical Grammar which can be broken down to a 3-year program. We are in year 2. He loves this program. I hate it. lol!

Science:

This year he chose Physics. Our core program will be from Easy Peasy but we will supplement with STEAM KIDS, Backyard Science, Science Expeditions and anything else that catches our attention.

History:

He is required to study one year of Canadian History. This has proved to be a challenge as Canadian History is known to be boring and dry. We’ve always used Story of the World so this change will be huge.

I was unable to find what I wanted, therefore, this year I am pulling together my own curriculum. (Eeek!! I have only done this once before for a spring unit study)

I found Canadian History Visions and Voices Textbook along with the Country Notebooking Pages. We will use Canadian Flyer Adventure books and Dear Canada books as well.

Note: If you are studying Canadian Geography the pages for Canada are included in the Free 600 Pages! Or  you can purchase just the provinces you want.

Physical Ed. and Health:

We are pretty active family and will be aiming for 30 minutes a day. These will include swimming, skating, mountain biking, hiking, and shoveling snow.

Health we will be using Physical Fitness: Looking Good, Feeling Good as our spine.

Cooking:

I was thrilled he wanted to take cooking. He has decided to cook one dinner meal a week from planning to meal time. This will include writing the grocery list, buy the food, preparing, cooking and clean up.

He started this summer by working on his knife skills and helping prepare dinners with me or his father.

Then he’s moved on to both the Instant Pot course for kids and the full E-course Kids Cook Real Food.

Foreign Language:

He has been learning French over the last few years and has decided to try Breaking The Barrier French along with Duolingo.

I will be ordering this in a month. Being Canadian I have to worry about cross-border fees. If you know a Canadian store that carries this product, I’d love to know.

There we have it. Our 10th grade homeschool curriculum choices. It is nice to hear we have been approved with these choices but still have the freedom to switch tracks if needed.

You might think that high school is scary. I sure did. I have learned that it is great to be able to step back and let him take responsibility for his education.
