How We Got Started On This Crazy Homeschooling Life

Many people ask me, “How did you end up homeschooling and working?”

I did not plan to homeschool. I planned on sending my son to a traditional public school.

This was the “normal” thing to do.

It was all planned out.

Nice and practical.

Then came registration day at the local school. Everything was going great!

Forms were filled out and then an eye test.

My son was asked to say the numbers, which he did.

Then colors, which he did.

Then letters, which he did.

It was at this point, I was informed there was a problem.

The Teacher Told Me She Didn’t Want My Son In Her Class.

My almost 5-year-old could read, knew his colors and could count. I was waiting for the problem. But apparently, this was it.

See-his classmates of 20-25 children-could not.

They didn’t know their letters.

They didn’t know their colors.

They didn’t know their numbers.

They didn’t know…after all that is why they go to school. Right? I guess not.

The teacher told me she didn’t want my not even 5 year old son, in her class.

Why? Because she didn’t have the time to “deal” with him.

She then reminded me that because there were so many children she would not have the time to spend with my son.

He will be bored and become a trouble maker in the class.

“We no longer skip the children ahead, ” She reminded me.

The Homeschooling Solution:

The teacher next informed me I should try homeschooling since skipping was no longer allowed.

I thought she was crazy! No way did I have the patience to teach him at home!

I rushed home to share this laughable idea with my husband. Figuring we’d have a good laugh and continue on. But when I related how the teacher thought I should try to homeschool him,  he was all for it.

Great! I am surrounded by two crazy people. And guess what? I was right, I did not have the patience for it, but I learned, and he learned and we fell in love!

Still Going Strong!

My son has just entered grade 11, my daughter, grade 10, and I love every crazy moment.

Do I know what I am doing? To be honest, No! When I started I had no clue.

Now? After 9 years, I am more comfortable and still learning, and someday’s, I still have no clue!

I am grateful to have a husband who supports me completely in this adventure, to live in an area where homeschooling is allowed without a legal battle and family and friends who listen politely. At the same time, I rave about the many resources that we love to use. I hope to share some with you in the future.

Problems Become Solutions:

Sometimes what seems like a problem is really a solution waiting to happen!

After 9+ years of homeschooling, I am happy to say it is one of the best decisions for our family! Life has changed and gotten more hectic with me returning to work, but I endeavor to enjoy the moments as they come!

Do you homeschool? What started you on this crazy journey? Let me know in the comments below! I would love to hear from you!

Take care,

Jen

PS. Please note: Before I go, I want to mention that as much as I love homeschooling and it fits so great with our family, I do realize this is not the only way to go and is not right for every child/family.

I was in public school, then correspondence, then back in public school. I have nothing against public school. I admire the hardworking teachers and other educators that put in so much time and effort daily-keep up the good work!
