Spring Cleaning Tips For Busy Moms
Let’s talk about spring cleaning. No wait, don’t run away! I promise to make this process as painless as possible with practical spring cleaning tips for busy moms.
In the past, I’ve shared cleaning tips for busy moms. If you are anything like me the very thought of spring cleaning your home feels overwhelming and all of a sudden other things take priority, like your work deadlines, gathering up your homeschool books, and making supper.
Trust me, I get it! I know as a busy working, homeschooling mom spring cleaning your home might get pushed to the bottom of your task list more than once.
To help you find the time and energy to spring clean your home, I’m sharing spring cleaning tips for busy moms to help you get it done!
Notice, I said to help you make spring cleaning happen in your home. I’m not sharing tips on how to clean different parts of your home, cleaning supplies to use, etc.
No, these tips are designed to help working moms who also homeschool find the time to check spring cleaning off your task list once and for all!
11 Spring Cleaning Tips For Busy Moms
As a busy working homeschool mom juggling all the things, I know you don’t have time to worry about spring cleaning.
I asked my online community, The Working Homeschool Mom Club for cleaning tips and gathered up some of the best spring cleaning tips for busy moms that you can use year-round.
1. Spring Cleaning Isn’t Limited To Spring
That’s right. You can spring clean any time of the year. The first spring cleaning tip that working moms gave was to choose a good time of the year to clean when life is a little bit slower.
If spring means that your work schedule gets insanely busy or maybe you go away for spring break, then you don’t need to add more pressure by adding spring cleaning to your plate.
The purpose of spring cleaning is deep clean, declutter and organize your home. If spring is too chaotic for you, pick another time to do it.
Another option is to create a monthly cleaning schedule and spread it out over the year.
2. Create A Plan
Spring cleaning your home is a large task. To make it more doable, break it down into smaller, bite-size tasks.
Create a spring cleaning list based on your home. Pull out a notebook or your Cleaning Planner For Busy Moms and make a list of the rooms you want to spring clean along with the tasks that you need to do in each room.
Another way to organize your spring cleaning is to make a list of each area you want to focus on. Break it down into smaller pieces as it’s easier. For example, your spice cabinet, your dresser, and your husband’s dresser….. instead of by room.
This list will come in handy in a minute!
Either way, break down the big overwhelming task of spring cleaning into manageable tasks.
3. Get Childcare
If you have small children, this spring cleaning tip for busy moms is essential.
Little children are wonderful and they love to help. By all means, teach them to help you around the house in your day-to-day cleaning but when it comes to spring cleaning your home childcare might be best.
Swap with another mom, or drop them off with a family member while blocking off time to clean and declutter is smart!
If you have a set time on your calendar to clean, you are more likely to follow through.
4. Get Your Family Involved
One of my favorite spring cleaning tips for busy moms is to get your family involved in the cleaning.
If you already made a cleaning plan, pull out those lists and get your family to pick a task to do.
Don’t forget to take into consideration the age and ability of your children. Now might not be the best time to teach them how to clean something but you know your kids best.
One of my children is very good at organizing. I clean and declutter then she organizes and puts things back.
Sharing the load and making it a family event can make spring cleaning more fun!
5. Declutter First
One of the best spring cleaning tips for busy moms is to declutter first! I don’t even declutter the day I plan on cleaning but I do a little bit at a time.
Start with walking around the house and making piles:
- Keep and use
- Keep and store
- Donate or gift
- Trash
Yes, one room or task at a time (like a closet). Shoes that you never wear? See if there is a place locally to donate to. Clothing? There’s a place for that, etc. You can also list things on your Facebook page or connect to a Buy Nothing Group for people to come to pick them up.
Don’t forget your digital clutter and papers that inevitably grow.
Decluttering before spring clean is a great tip because it results in less stuff to clean and organize.
6. Go At Your Own Pace
Spring cleaning doesn’t have to happen all in one day. Sure it’s nice to dig in and get it over with but sometimes my schedule just doesn’t allow for it.
It’s okay to create a cleaning schedule that makes sense for you such as tackling a room at a time, or blocking off a weekend and getting it all done.
7. Play Music
If music makes you want to “move it, move it” create a fun, motivating music list for your spring cleaning day.
Music makes cleaning more fun, and joyful and motivate you to get it done.
8. Start Slow
While creating a cleaning list can help reduce the overwhelm of spring cleaning it can still be hard to be motivated to START.
The best spring cleaning tip for busy moms I’ve heard to overcome this is to start small.
Clean out one drawer, one shelf, one corner, and check it off the list. This will help build momentum and encourage you to keep going!
9. Use Timers To Focus
Timers are a great way to stay focused on the task at hand and limit distractions.
Pull out your spring cleaning list, set a timer for 30 minutes, and dig in. When the timer goes off, take a break.
Before you set another timer, toss the garbage you found in that room in the trash. Add to the donate pile and put things away that you found in the wrong place.
If you try to do that during the “spring cleaning time block” you’ll get distracted from that room and end up with 3 half-cleaned rooms by the end of the day!
This seemingly silly “timers” tactic can actually greatly improve your productivity when it comes to spring cleaning
10. Celebrate Progress
Spring cleaning can feel like scaling a mountain, celebrate how much you accomplished when you are done cleaning for the day.
Every little bit helps. Take time to celebrate the progress and your efforts.
11. Done For You Cleaning Services
This spring cleaning tip for busy moms is perfect for working moms because our job is to budget our time and money.
If you don’t have time to spring clean, hire part of the cleaning out such as a carpet cleaner or all of the spring cleaning out.
Try one of these highly recommended sources:
- Care.com
- Task Rabbit
- Molly Maid
- Ask a mom who might like to make some extra money
- Hire a teen or pay your own teen
There is no shame in wanting to spend your precious time with your family instead of deep cleaning your home.
