Never Underestimate The Power Of Thankfulness In Your Homeschool

Have you ever been at your wit’s end in your homeschool? Use these 5 ways to empower your homeschool through thankfulness.

Being thankful in a thankless world is hard. The pressure to always notice what is missing instead of what you have is strong.

In order to combat this, I’ve started working hard on shifting my own mindset and focusing on the good in our homeschool life.

As a working mom who’s always on the go, learning to slow down and reflect on what I am thankful for takes effort but is a vital part of my well being.

Never Underestimate The Power Of Thankfulness In Your Homeschool

Being thankful is important. Sometimes we underestimate the power of being thankful.

Did you know? Being thankful is one of the easiest ways to lift your mood. To kick-start your motivation. To help you find joy even if your life is insane.

Reflecting on what you are thankful for can be powerful in your homeschool. And will spill over into your life as a whole.

Power To Redirect Our Thoughts & Change Your Day

In spite of the images on social media, homeschooling is not always a walk in the park. Some days it downright sucks.

In those dark days, that yellow bus looks pretty good.

I have found that intentionally focusing on the parts of homeschool I am truly thankful for helps me redirect my thoughts and, as a result, can change my day.

This alone is a very powerful tool in your homeschool.

Anytime you’ve been at wit’s end, and you have the power to change that, wouldn’t you?

Sure you would! Let’s talk about 5 ways we can do that.

1. Focus On The Small Things.

“Enjoy the little things,
for one day you may look back
and realize
they were the big things.”

― Robert Brault

Being thankful reminds us to pull back from all the nasty in our lives at that moment and focus on what really matters.

Questions To Ask Yourself:

  • What is it that is throwing you off?
  • Put you in a bad mood?
  • And how important is it really?

Identifying the problem is our first step.

The second is taking action to redirect our attention and thoughts to the good things.

Focus on the little things. They matter.

2. Write It Down

When looking at your homeschool try to focus on what went right that day.

Choose 3-5 things you are thankful for and write them down. If you can’t think of 3 don’t stress. Start small. Start with one.

Ask Yourself These Two Questions:

  • What 3 things am I thankful for?
  • What 3 people am I thankful for?

For example, here is my list for today for the first question:

  1. I’m thankful homeschooling allows my kids to follow their interests.
  2. I’m thankful homeschooling allows me to spend time with my kids.
  3. I’m thankful homeschooling is flexible enough to work around my work schedule.

It doesn’t have to be earth-shattering stuff. Focus on the little things.

Some have found keeping a gratitude journal the key to helping them be focused on being thankful.

Every day they write down things they are thankful for.

This can give you the motivation to overcome the challenge and keep going. This is the power of being thankful in your homeschool.

3. Put It Into Words

Now that you’ve identified who you are thankful for do not keep it to yourself. Express your gratitude.

I shared a few tips on how to can help your kids express gratitude here. Feel free to have a look and use them for yourself.

Expressing your thankfulness to those around you is like a precious gift. It helps them feel valued and noticed and builds their confidence.

A simple expression goes a long way. Focus on the small things.

4. Value Yourself

Can I just take a minute and say how hard this one is??

We need to value others and ourselves.

Ask: What are 3 things I am thankful for about myself?

The answers may surprise you.

Here are a few of my own answers:

  1. I am really thankful I stuck with a tough project that challenged me. I learned a lot.
  2. I’m really thankful I can walk around my yard. I hurt my knee a while back and I really appreciate the way our bodies heal.
  3. I’m thankful for my sense of humor.

This exercise might feel uncomfortable at first. The more you do it the easier it gets. Focus on the small things.

5. Never Take Things For Granted

Are you going through a really rough time? Something unplanned, unexpected or overwhelming?

This is when being thankful can be the most powerful.

Being thankful forces us to step back and notice all the things we may take for granted.

In the winter we lose our power. We get a ton of snow and wind. We’ve learned over the years to be prepared. But let me tell you THAT is when I realize the things I’ve taken for granted.

No power means no running water.

No flushing toilets.

No washing your hands.

No filling a glass with water.

No hot coffee.

It reminds me to be thankful each day for a roof over my head, clothes on my back, and food on my table.

When we are going through a hard time, focusing on these small things can help us put our situation in perspective.

Did you notice where the power of being thankful comes from? It comes from focusing on small things because those are the things that add up and make a big difference.

Being thankful in our homeschool is vital for redirecting our thoughts, finding personal joy, and motivating us to keep going.
