I need to know, what is your “ice cream”?
Every day we make a million decisions as moms. We are all busy, with a never-ending to-do list. Some of our decisions are vital that take research, planning, and days of debating. Others not so much.
No one really cares what color underwear you are wearing. Unless you wear black with white pants. That one, you might want to reconsider. Just sayin’ 😉
The point is, most of our decisions such as what to eat, what to do next, where to go…these we do instinctively without much thought. Snap decisions. Yes or no. These are needed. Part of “getting it done.”
But sometimes as we are rushing around we come to a seemingly small insignificant decision that is actually quite a bit larger than first anticipated.
Let me share…
And yes this is where the ice cream comes in 😉
Last night I ended up working super late. I try to get to bed around 10:30 pm because 6 am comes too early.
But last night…oh no. It was after one. Why? Because I chose to eat the ice cream.
It was one of “those days”. It probably looked much like your day.
I worked all morning, had groceries to buy, family members to run errands for, a gym to hit for a workout, meals to cook, dishes to wash, laundry in the washer and dryer and the list goes on.
Nothing new right? A million regular decisions as usual.
I had been fighting with this aspect of work that refused to do what I wanted it to do. It was on my mind but I was putting off sitting down and digging into the problem for later that night. I need quiet and my brain. I had spent 2 hours earlier and was no closer to solving the problem.
After supper, I came out from folding one load of laundry to the kitchen to check if the kids had done their chores. They stack and scrape the dishes, I wash. This week anyway.
I walked out and my daughter was serving up ice cream. Chapmans Gluten Free Cookies and Cream-hungry?? 😉 She asked me if I wanted a bowl.
A mini battle waged.
a) say no and work on the laundry, dishes, and the problem?
b) take a few minutes and enjoy a bowl of ice cream with my kids?
This battle, I am proud to say, didn’t last long. “Sure do!”
We ate ice cream and played a game.
Guess what happened?
We had fun. I had really great moments with the kids.
And the dishes and chores and online work? Well..it waited.
In fact, don’t tell anyone but the dishes ended up waiting all night in my sink. Nothing bad happened.
I call these “Ice Cream Moments”.
Creating memories for us and our kids are so vital.
Mine are teenagers. They aren’t going to be around forever. They have lives to live and it is my job to make sure they have the life skills needed such as cooking, budget skills and so on.
It is also my job to enjoy them.
Spend time with them. In the large picture of life, these are the moments that will matter. Savor them.
So next time momma, you have a choice between “ice cream” and stuff that really can wait, pick the ice cream!
I’d love to know, what is your “ice cream”?
PS. If you or your kids are gluten free you might want to check out Katie’s FREE 10 Snacks Your Kids Can Make. (You just need to give her your email address!) I picked it up and it has gluten free options, REAL food. Not just “skip the bread.” I plan on digging in to the recipes this summer starting with the pumpkin bars. Keep an eye out as I’ll be sharing how they turned out. 🙂
