Having a handy-dandy list of ideas to keep boredom at bay is a lifesaver, especially when you’re juggling work and homeschooling.

Why You Need Summer Ideas For Bored Kids

As a working mom who homeschools, you know that just because summer is here doesn’t mean your work schedule is any easier.

You still have tasks to do and deadlines to meet, all while trying to keep your kids entertained and stimulated. Without the structure of a homeschool schedule, it’s easy for your kids to fall into the “I’m so bored!” trap.

That’s why it’s important to encourage your kids to engage their imaginations, try new hobbies, and explore new interests through free play. And to help you do that, I recommend creating a handy list of activities for your kids to choose from.

When you’re put on the spot, it can be hard to come up with ideas, so take some time to brainstorm a few “summer solutions when your kids are bored!” and write down anything your kids would like to try. That way, you’ll always have a go-to list of fun activities to keep your kids busy during those long summer days.

9 Creative Summer Solutions When Your Kids Are Bored

Let’s be honest, there are times when your kids are bored and saying, “go find something to do” is not helpful.

It is really hard to work at home if you are also trying to keep your kids entertained. This is why I am sharing these 9 creative summer solutions when your kids are bored. These ideas will keep your kids of all ages entertained all summer long!

1. Put on a play/concert

If your kids love to dress up and perform, this activity is perfect for them. With a few kid-friendly toys such as keyboards and microphones and a box of old clothes, they can create a performance of a lifetime.

Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Encourage your kids to come up with their own storylines, characters, and dialogue.
  • Provide them with props and costumes to enhance the performance.
  • Invite family and friends to be the audience for their show.
  • Record the performance and watch it together later.

2. Create an art project

Creating art is a great way to keep your kids engaged and foster their creativity. Here are some ideas to get them started:

  • Encourage them to use different materials such as crayons, markers, paint, or colored pencils to create their artwork.
  • Provide them with different surfaces to draw or paint on, such as paper, rocks, wood, or canvas.
  • Incorporate fun extras such as stickers, glitter, or items they have collected such as rocks, sticks, or leaves.
  • Create a themed art project, such as making a summer-themed collage or creating a painting of their favorite summer memory.

These summer solutions when your kids are bored are a perfect way to make use of old-school supplies.

3. Read a book

Reading is an excellent way to keep your kids entertained while also fostering their imagination and love of learning.

Here are some tips for making reading time fun:

  • Visit your local library or bookstore to find new and exciting books to read.
  • Encourage your kids to choose books that interest them, or introduce them to new genres.
  • Make reading time a family activity by reading together and discussing the story.
  • Set reading goals and track their progress, such as reading a certain number of books or pages over the summer.

4. Creative writing fun

Creative writing is an excellent way to keep your kids engaged and foster their imagination and storytelling skills.

Here are some ideas to get them started:

  • Encourage your kids to come up with their own storylines, characters, and settings.
  • Provide them with prompts or questions to help get their creative juices flowing, such as “What happens next?” or “What if the main character made a different choice?”
  • Set a timer and challenge them to write as much as they can within a certain timeframe.
  • Share their writing with family and friends, or create a family writing journal where everyone can contribute their own stories.

5. Water play

Water play is a great way to cool off on hot summer days while also keeping your kids entertained. Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Set up a slip n’ slide in the backyard and let your kids slide away!
  • Have a water balloon fight using products like Bunch O Balloons to make filling the balloons faster and easier.
  • Set up a sprinkler in the backyard and let your kids run through it to cool off.
  • Create your own sprinkler using a plastic bottle by following these easy instructions.

I hope these tips help provide some ideas and inspiration for summer solutions when your kids are bored.

6. Have a Tub Fun Day

When it’s too hot to play outside or you can’t get to a pool or beach, fill up the tub for a fun, refreshing alternative. Here are some ideas to make it even more enjoyable:

  • Add some bubbles, bath toys or glow sticks to create a fun atmosphere.
  • Put on some music, a podcast, or audiobook to listen to while they play.
  • Allow them to experiment with pouring, filling, and measuring cups to practice their motor skills.
  • Let them create and experiment with their own DIY bath paint or slime.
  • Encourage them to try washing their own toys in the water, or create a “car wash” for toy cars.

7. Unbox Those Subscription Boxes

Subscription boxes can provide hours of fun and learning for kids. If you have some lying around, bring them out and let your kids dive into them once again. Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Let them recreate their favorite experiments or crafts from past boxes.
  • Challenge them to create something new using only the materials from a box.
  • Allow them to use their creativity and imagination to come up with their own experiments or crafts using the materials from multiple boxes.
  • Give them a time limit to complete the activity or experiment, and see what they come up with.

Bonus: Hidden Toys

If your kids are getting bored with their current toys, try hiding some away and bringing them out as a surprise later. These old toys become new again.

Other summer solutions when your kids are bored with their toys are:

  • Hide toys in unexpected places, such as in the pantry, the bathtub, or in the fridge (make sure they’re non-perishable toys!).
  • Set up a scavenger hunt with clues leading to the hidden toys.
  • Challenge kids to find a certain number of hidden toys within a certain amount of time.
  • Put a new twist on old toys by adding new accessories or making new rules for play.
