Getting Creative With Little Passports Science Expeditions

Have you ever wanted more in your homeschool? I’m sharing how I use Little Passports Science Expeditions in my homeschool to add fun and connect with my kids as a working mom.

I know most people set goals in January for each year. Me? I need to be different. Yes, need.

As in when everyone was wearing cords in school I was wearing jeans. No way I was going to be a carbon copy of everyone else.

Therefore, instead of jumping on the bandwagon of setting goals in January, I set my homeschool goals at the end of the previous year.

My BIG SCARY GOAL for this year was to add more fun. Be more flexible. Step away from the books a bit more and think outside the box.

Why I Set The Goal Of Having Fun In My Homeschool

As a full-time working mom who also homeschools full-time, TIME is a problem. It is just easier and faster to follow the homeschool outline and check off the boxes, right?

But, my kids are getting older and time is flying by. Looking back, I didn’t want our homeschool memories to be a list of boxes we checked off.

I wanted more for our homeschool. More fun. More reading whatever you wanted. Not just what was on the list.

More songs played throughout the days, crazy dancing around, and singing at the top of your lungs.

More park visits. More play days.

Just more.

I can honestly say while I have majorly failed at some of these (*ahem* park days) I have been able to adjust sloooooowly my routine-loving, textbook workbook, “I hate change kids” into let’s go with the flow.

It has taken effort, planning, time and work.

And I haven’t done it alone.

I have been happy to work with some amazing people that have allowed me to test, try, and play with programs, e-books, and other resources. Some have been amazing, like the Kids STEAM Book.  Other things didn’t quite work out for my two.

Discovering Little Passports Science Expeditions!

One of the programs I always wanted to get my hands on was Little Passports. Unfortunately, by the time I heard about them, my little kids weren’t so little anymore.

That is why I was so excited to see that they have a brand new box out for older kids, Little Passports Science Expeditions.

How Little Passports Science Expeditions Subscription Box Works:

Every month, your child will receive a kit full of science experiments related to themes like rockets, forensic science, vision, caves and crystals, northern lights and magnetism, hydrology, and so much more!

Each subscription packages include hands-on activities that encourage interdisciplinary thinking — widely thought of as STEAM — which includes science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

Quick Overview Of Little Passports Science Expeditions:

Little Passports creates several different subscription boxes for all ages. The Little Passports Science Expeditions is recommended for ages 9 and up. Each month of subscription includes:

  • Hands-on science experiments including instructions and supplies kit
  • A 16-page comic book with glossary and bonus activities
  • A new mystery to solve with Sam and Sofia in a graphic novel comic book
  • Achievement badges for each monthly theme
  • Access to bonus online videos and science content
  • Science case bag & lab notebook which arrive with your first package

BONUS! One of my favorite parts was that when the box was sent out I received an email letting me know it was on the way plus a shopping list for anything else not included in the box.

Things I would normally have on hand but knowing we are moms and human…it was awesome to check if I had them in the house and I had time to get them before the box arrived.

For the record, my shopping list for the 2nd box of Caves and Crystals was baking soda, food coloring, and a rock the size of a peach pit. Not big, expensive or time-sucking things. Perfect for me!

Shipping: Being located in Canada I wondered if I would have shipping problems.

Often I will discover amazing programs only to find:

  • They don’t ship to Canada
  • The cost is crazy high
  • There are extra fees

I was worried so I reached out via email. The person I was corresponding with was amazing. I might even say one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with customer service.

Not only did I not have issues with shipping but I was amazed at how easy it was. I got the notification the box was sent and a few days later it was delivered. No-fuss!

Unboxing Little Passports Science Expeditions!

When it arrived I was so excited. I may have been more pumped than the kids. As we had never done an unboxing video I thought it would be fun to try. You can see our unboxing of our first box here, and the one we will be playing with this month here.

Let me just say once we knew what to expect, the kids were probably as excited, if not more, than me. Yay!

Homeschooling Science Made FUN!

Can I be honest, and say sometimes homeschool science isn’t that fun? Who wants to spend all their time reading and never doing?

My goal with Little Passports Science Expeditions was to have fun without a lot of work on my end.

However, opening the box, I did have a few concerns:

  • How many science experiments were included in the box?
  • Would we have time to do them all?
  • Would they turn out?
  • Would the kids be bored?
  • Was it going to take forever?

I shouldn’t have worried. We had a blast and they all worked! How cool is that? We spread them out over a few days and took our time.

Little Passports Science Expeditions Forensic Science Box

Since this was our first box it included the bag to keep everything in which is awesome! As well as the notebook, a magnifying glass, test tube stand and tubes, coffee filter, balloon, and other items you would need.

We learned about DNA and actually made DNA we could see from a strawberry. My son was super glad it was a berry and not blood. (ha!)

Exploring DNA with Little Passports Science Expeditions. BIG fun for BIG kids!

We learned about fingerprinting and got to examine how even though we are all family, our fingerprints are similar and yet unique.

We learned about liquid splatters and how you can tell the distance they have fallen. I loved watching the kids work together to figure out how to measure and hold everything.

Teamwork is not their specialty as they both like to lead. But after I decided to bury myself in a cup of coffee and butt out, they figured it out. Sometimes we need to just step back and shut up.

We also tried our hand at forgery.

Little Passports Science Expeditions Caves and Crystals Box

Our Caves and Crystals box has been a blast so far. That doesn’t really surprise me as it is ROCKS and my kids love anything to do with rocks. Right now I have crystals growing on a shelf in the clear container that came with it and some growing on a string. (Currently on my deep freezer! #homeschoolmom)

These experiments take time so you will need patience which is great for older children who tend to have a little more now that they are not 2!

We are still working our way through this box but so far it has been a major hit! They have done some of the puzzles in the novel and we are planning our new experiment for next week.

I love how I can spread them out so they last longer and add a bit of fun to our week.

The boxes are meant to build on one another so I was super happy they sent a reminder to save everything from the boxes to be used again. Reminders are good!

We explored, discovered, played and mostly had fun.
