Learning opportunities all year round!

This book is great for all seasons.

Some activities can be learned year round such as tracking animals.

Life under a log looks great for the colder fall weather. The leaves are falling, plant life is decaying, and we are often found hiking through the woods.

In my part of Canada, the birds are getting ready to leave. Building the bird feeder and tracking those that stay look like it will be a great fun fall/winter activity. My mother-in-law always has feeders and the children have helped fill them. Check out how I used this resource to help me build my first Unit Study!

Using the printable sheets along with the books, apps, and other resources in the book will allow a deeper study of our feathered friends.

This year I was telling my husband I really wanted to try a garden again, but maybe a smaller one. Lo, and behold there is a section called Square Foot Gardening! Needless to say, I can’t wait to try this out!

We all know a garden is teeming with life. It needs to be in order to grow plants. What you may not know is I have a special skill! Mad skills...of killing everything. That bleeding heart plant no one can kill. Dead. My mother-in-law gave me 3-4 African Violet plants because they are hard to kill. All dead.

This book gives me hope. A list of what is needed, “how to”, ideas of what to plant and even how to care for it.

As a precautionary step, I might be the supervisor and let the kids do all the work, in the name of science but of course! 😉

I’m enjoying Backyard Science! It’s a fun way to learn outside, but it’s so much more than that too. It gets them involved in the world around them, taking notice, inspiring them to ask questions and dig deeper. If you’re wanting your kids to learn more about nature, this is a really easy hands-on way to go.

How are you learning outside with your kids?

Take care,

Jen
